아니다 meaning - anida meaning

I know that 아니다 means "no/not", but sometimes people use it in contexts where it seems like the meaning is "this is not right" (in a moral sense). For example, does the sentence:

아무리 그래도 이건 좀 아닌 것 같아요.

mean "Even if it is like that, I don't think this is the right thing to do"?

Can you shed some light on if I'm correct or if I'm just misunderstanding?

I would just translate it as 'even so, this doesn't seem right'. Whether it is talking about something being the right thing to do (morally), or the right answer to a question (factually), or something else altogether is to be determined by context.

Yes, it can be used as 'wrong', as in the moral context. The sentence that you've used exemplifies the 'other' usage of 아니다 pretty well, but it actually means simly 'Even so, I don't think this is right.'. 틀리다 would be 'wrong' in factual context.

Don't try to translate everything so directly. Languages don't always work the same way. Use the surrounding context to make the best translation, for example 안돼요.

No way. It's not allowed. It's not okay. It's not ready. That isn't correct. It's wrong.

Depending when it is used it can be translated many ways in English, but the idea behind the word doesn't change. Keep this in mind, and enjoy learning :]

I know...but you didnt answer the question

sorry, I'm just not an expert on linguistics like you, so I don't know the actual logic behind the languages I speak. I just try to put things in layman's term :P

Great explanation, thank you yet again KEH_Linguist!

I actually can't think of a single example in which you indicate a positive behavior by attaching an affix to a negative behavior.

selfish -> unselfish

level 2

A:감사합니다 B:아닙니다

In this case it's intended to be used like "no problem" not really a negative behaviour.

level 1

in this sentence, 아닌 것 is simply a noun form of "not" combined with it's complement (이거) creates "this (thing) is not a thing" which, to me, seems a little odd, but we don't have the context to know what 이 refers to, i don't think...

level 1

Aside from everything said already, I'd say you can use "아니다" as a way of dismissing something, even when it's not about something moral.

Another context where this would work..: "엄마, 이 옷 어때?" "에이, 이건 좀 아니다." (별로다)
